ATTENTION!!! ----- All Utah ASTA Composers:
The Utah Chapter of ASTA with NSOA is pleased to announce the 2007 Utah ASTA with NSOA Composition Competition.
Purpose: It is our goal to encourage and support composers within our organization. By providing a monetary incentive and a vehicle for showcasing new compositions we hope to stimulate a creative energy that will result in the birth of new, educationally sound and musically motivating works that will be studied and performed by student orchestras throughout our state and beyond. It is anticipated that recognition from winning this competition will be helpful in securing publication and name recognition for the composer and the new composition. It will also provide visibility and recognition for our Utah Chapter of ASTA with NSOA.
Program: ASTA Composers are invited to submit an original, unpublished composition that is suitable for middle school/junior high or high school string orchestras. Materials must be postmarked by Saturday, April 28, 2007.
Prize: Composer of winning composition will receive $1000. When published, the score and each part must carry this designation: “Winner, 2007 Utah ASTA Composition Competition”. Upon publication, all royalties will remain the sole property of the composer.
Grade Level: 3½ - 4, scored for String Orchestra (optional piano and percussion instrumentation allowed)
Length of piece: Multi-movement work – 4 to 8 minutes
Specifications: Composition must be tied to a Utah theme (history related, cultural background, geographic features, etc.) Only one entry per composer will be allowed. Manuscripts will be evaluated by score analysis and live performance if necessary. The manuscript must not contain any identification of the composer. The manuscript must be clear and legible and include the title and rehearsal numbers or letters. String parts should be thoroughly edited with bowings and fingerings.
Components: • Application • Four (4) copies of the score and one (1) set of parts are required. • Application fee: $25 (non-refundable) • Composers should include a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage if score/music return is desired at the conclusion of the competition.
Selection: In the preliminary round, all entries will be screened through score analysis by a panel of judges. If a final round is needed selected compositions will be performed by a high school orchestra for a panel of judges. Only the winner’s name will be announced.
Premiere Performance: We anticipate that the winning composition will be performed at the 2008 UMEA Mid-Winter Institute in February of 2008 at St. George, Utah by the orchestra selected to perform at the convention as part of their concert for Utah music educators.
